YOGA AND POSTURE
While Yoga may not make you grow it will improve your posture. It can make you look taller, thinner and more confident.
Many postural problems are caused because we spend many hours at a computer, desk or driving a car. We sit in chairs designed more for looks than for lumbar support. Our lives have become more sedentary. In non sedentary cultures generally they don’t have the same epidemic of back and neck problems that we do.
A woman gracefully carrying a large basket of food on her head must have a perfectly aligned spine to carry such a weight as well strong supportive muscles. You cannot gain that sort of alignment by sitting around watching the tube!
You can achieve this strength and alignment by a regular yoga practice. Yoga improves your posture by strengthening, elongating and aligning your spine. Yoga strengthens your abdominal muscles which help to support your back.
To create good posture yoga can develop your awareness of your present posture i.e. the curves of your spine, the alignment of your pelvis in relation to your shoulders and the pressure you carry through your feet. Through the guidance of a certified yoga teacher you can develop a yoga practice specific to your needs. Finally through this new awareness of your posture you can take this into your daily life.
With consistent practice your posture improves. You will begin to notice your body feels at ease, you feel more energetic, you breathe more freely and you feel positive and confident. With yoga practice not only are you training the body but also the mind. You will feel more present in your body.
Iyengar Yoga classes are offered at Yoga Zeal for all levels of student including prenatal classes. Yoga is open to everyone regardless of age or ability.
