Iyengar Yoga
Smt.Geeta Iyengar
The world’s most widely practised method of Yoga is that taught by Sri BKS Iyengar. He has taught in all 5 continents. His text books on Yoga have become classics.
Iyengar Yoga emphasises correct alignment of all parts of the body within each posture(asana). This precision builds strength and stamina, balance and flexibility and a new sense of well being.
The Ramamani Memorial Iyengar Yoga Institute is located in Pune, India. His daughter Smt. Geeta and son Sri Prashant Iyengar also teach.
Iyengar Yoga teachers make the commitment to travel to Pune to study with the Iyengar family.
BKS Iyengar
BKS Iyengar has evolved a methodical and precise practice of posture (asana) and breathing (pranayama).
He developed props such as bolsters, belts, blocks and blankets which can be used when necessary allowing students to progress in their practice safely and at their own pace to suit their bodies needs.
Iyengar yoga is for everyone.
As yoga asanas can be adapted with the use of props this makes it available to everyone’s requirements. No one is too old or too stiff, too fat or too thin to practice Iyengar Yoga!
What distinguishes an Iyengar Yoga class.
A clear demonstration of the asanas; the teacher observes and corrects alignment in the asanas and specific points are given to increase the students awareness and perception in the asanas. There is a methodical progressive method of teaching beginning with the standing asanas and progressing as each student gains a clearer understanding of the asanas practiced.
